The Story

Due to climate change over the last five years, this community in Afar, one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth, in Ethiopia – has seen the amount and duration of rainfall decrease making it incredibly difficult to survive. Access to water is a basic need and here in Scotland we take it for granted. In this Afar community they have none in the village and so the women have to travel for hours every night – when it is cooler – to collect water for their daily needs. For drinking water, for household use and for their animals. They take donkeys so they can take back enough water to see them through each day but it is not enough.Their livestock, which they rely on for income to buy food and clothes, dies due to lack of sustenance. Life has become unimaginably hard.
